02 Dec Because You Are You
In this blog I’m sharing a heartfelt gift. If your time is short, please click the links below to receive it. If you have a few moments, please read on to learn how this gift came to be.
I often suggest to parents that asking a child “Why do I love you?” can be a helpful way to assess how that relationship is going. If a child replies along the lines of, “Because I keep my room clean,” or “Because I get good grades,” then something is likely amiss.
If a child responds along the lines of, “Because I’m your child,” then things are likely positive.
With this in mind, some years ago, my stepdaughter and I created a simple song to express unconditional love.
But what does unconditional love really mean? To us, it meant love that couldn’t be earned; love that was impossible to lose or get disqualified from. Love, ultimately, that arises from Source and includes every unique expression of Source.
Which means we don’t actually create it but rather choose to allow it to flow through us. That choice is always available, no matter how far or how long we may have strayed from it.
To share this love with people close to us is the greatest gift of all. Especially if those people don’t believe they’re worthy of it, and/or don’t know how to access it on their own.
Now, back to the song. We found, though it lasts less than 30 seconds, and can be memorized in just as little time, that hearing this song sung to yourself directly is powerful and moving.
Somehow, without planning, the song became a standard at every family birthday party and personal milestone. Then, I began sharing it with many of my groups.
This year, in my P4 yearlong program, the participants decided to sing it to one another at our fall retreat. As usual with the song, hearts opened and healed.
As part of that experience, one of the P4 participants, Melanie Hill, recorded her own version of the song, complete with ukelele accompaniment and stirring harmonies. This took the song’s impact to a whole new level.
Gratefully, I now share Melanie’s version with friends, clients, and anyone needing a direct dose of inclusion, appreciation, and spiritual embrace.
As a result, I often receive emails in return from parents, grandparents, partners and siblings – recounting the special moments and stories that came from singing the song to one another.
On behalf of all the creators, and all who’ve ever sung the song or had it to sung to them, I now pass the song onto you.
To listen and download to your media device: Because You Are You.
Once you receive the song, you own it. With the songmakers’ blessing, please play it and sing it for anyone (including yourself) with whom you’re inspired to share.
During this season of stuff, especially, feel free to pass on the song file to others and contribute to the ripple effect.
And remember, as the song says: “We love you. Because you are you.”
